Dr. David Samadi Launches Prostate Cancer Support Group at Lenox Hill Hospital
The support group starts in September and provides a safe place for men with prostate cancer and their loved ones to receive support and care for the emotional and physical challenges they face
NEW YORK, Sept. 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. David Samadi, world renowned prostate cancer surgeon, urologic oncologist and Chief of Robotic Surgery, is excited and pleased to announce the start of a prostate cancer support group beginning in September at Lenox Hill Hospital. The purpose is to assist individuals with information about prostate cancer and offer emotional support to men who are either newly diagnosed or survivors of the disease and for loved ones supporting them.
"When facing a major illness or stressful life change, you don't want to go through it alone," said Dr. Samadi. "That is where a support group can help. By forming a prostate cancer support group, men can meet together to discuss their experiences, share ideas and to provide emotional support for one another. Men need to know they are not isolated and that there are other men who have similar challenges. Support groups are ideal for being a safe place where men can open up with the comfort of knowing that everything that is said within the support group will be kept confidential."
One mission of this support group is to advocate awareness of the necessity of men getting an annual prostate cancer screening test (prostate specific antigen or PSA) in order to catch and curb this disease at its onset. It is also meant to assist men newly diagnosed with prostate cancer to help them understand this disease and the variety of options available for treatment. For men who are survivors of prostate cancer, this group is meant to encourage and inspire a positive mental outlook for them and those supporting them. In addition, this support group will also emphasize the importance of continued education to help men recognize the many effects of prostate cancer.
"My goal is that this support group will feel like a community of patients, family members and friends who are dedicated to dealing with prostate cancer together," stated Dr. Samadi. "These meetings will be open to anyone who shares these same attitudes and wants to reach out to others in the same situation."
Men who have prostate cancer can give valuable advice and support to other men newly diagnosed by being involved in a prostate cancer support group. By meeting and working together on a regular basis, this group can offer patients and their families' strength and hope as they go through their diagnosis, treatment and recovery together.
