Dr. Barry Friedberg, M.D. Recognized as one of 2017 Leading Physicians of the World
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Sept. 5, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Dr. Barry Friedberg, M.D., board certified anesthesiologist, was recently recognized as a 2017 Leading Physician of the World. In 1997, Friedberg began using the brain monitor. He was the first Orange County, CA, anesthesiologist to routinely measure propofol effect on the brain. The BIS number generated from the patients' foreheads allow them to control their anesthetic dose so neither too much, nor too little drug can be given, hence the term Goldilocks anesthesia.
In 1999, Friedberg published a statistically significant 30% reduction in propofol when using the BIS monitor. "Directly measuring the patient's brain response avoids over medicating," says Friedberg.
In 2004, Friedberg was invited to speak to anesthesiologists at Brooke Army hospital. After his presentation, one anesthesiologist contributed the 'Propofol Ketamine (PK) beyond cosmetic surgery: implications for military medicine and mass-casualty anesthesia' chapter for Friedberg's 2007 textbook, 'Anesthesia in Cosmetic Surgery.'
In 2007, Friedberg received a U.S. Congressional award for his contribution to military anesthesia in Iraq and Afghanistan, sparing the need for anesthesia machines and large quantities of oxygen to run the machines.
'Anesthesia in Cosmetic Surgery' was published by Cambridge University Press and since translated into Portuguese (2009) and Mandarin Chinese (2015). The BIS monitor appeared on the cover and in the chapters.
In 2009, the first anesthesia mortality study was published that showed 16M of 40M (i.e. 40%) of American patients every year experience postoperative brain fog from anesthesia over medication!
"Common sense tells us that too much medication cannot be good for patients. This mortality paper crystalized my thinking that brain monitoring should be the standard of care for major surgery under anesthesia," says Friedberg. "A nonprofit foundation unaffiliated with the BIS maker seemed best to inform the public."
In 2010, the Internal Revenue Service approved the 501c3 nonprofit designation to Friedberg's Goldilocks Anesthesia Foundation. His public information book, 'Getting Over Going Under, 5 things you MUST know before anesthesia' is available as a free, no obligation download from the foundation web site.
Friedberg continues to try to educate the public and his colleagues through social media like LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter as well as in numerous journal articles and book chapters.
Dr. Barry Friedberg has been interviewed extensively on anesthesia and propofol by FOX, CNN, True TV, and People Magazine during the Michael Jackson murder trial.
