ABOUT DR. ANNIE L. HEIDERSCHEIT

Dr. Annie Heiderscheit is a Board Certified Music Therapist with 18 years of clinical experience and is a licensed marriage and family therapist.  She holds an M.S. in Counseling from Iowa State University and has a Ph.D. in Music/Music Therapy from the University of Minnesota.  Dr. Heiderscheit also has advanced training in the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music/Music Psychotherapy from Temple University.  She is currently an Assistant Professor and Director of Arts and Healing in the Center for Spirituality and Healing, at the University of Minnesota's Academic Health Center.  Dr. Heiderscheit is actively conducting research exploring the use of music to reduce pain and anxiety in patients that are mechanically ventilated and is also using music to reduce stress and anxiety during mealtimes for patients with eating disorders.  She maintains a clinical practice at The Emily Program in outpatient/residential programs and a private practice providing music therapy services to clients throughout the Twin Cities metro area.  In 2007, she was selected by Remo, Inc. to become an endorsed facilitator of HealthRhythms Empowerment Drumming and in 2011, was re-elected secretary/treasurer of the World Federation of Music Therapy.  She is a member of the American Musical Therapy Association and the International Society for Music in Medicine.  She has authored and co-authored numerous publications and gives speeches regarding music therapy and music in health and healing.  She currently resides in Plymouth, Minnesota, where she enjoys reading, cooking, hiking and singing.
