doTERRA Wellness Advocate Volunteers with Manna Food Center
Poor nutrition can lead to greater risks of viruses and health issues, but the Mana Food Center is decreasing risks by providing nutritious food for those in need.
PLEASANT GROVE, Utah, March 28, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- When doTERRA Wellness Advocate Solange Hermenegildo looked for an opportunity for her daughter to serve volunteer hours for school, she found that the Manna Food Center was not only a great place for her daughter to serve, but for her to serve as well. Now, she works with the Manna Food Center to feed the hungry in her community.
The Manna Food Center's goals are to end hunger in Montgomery County, Md., and empower those they serve to become self-reliant. They strive to achieve these goals by providing nutritious food resources for individuals facing hunger or food insecurity, educating on food to promote healthy eating, and connecting the needy to resource providers.
Many of the citizens in this county struggle to keep food on the table—especially healthy food. The lack of healthy food and nutrition can highly influence an individual's health. Poor nutrition can lead to a weakened immune system, and a weakened immune system can increase the risk of viruses and infections affecting the body. In addition, viruses can spur the common cold, the flu (influenza), and pneumonia, and these viruses can be harder to fight off for those with weak immune systems. By providing nutritious food for those in need, the Manna Food Center is helping people avoid hunger and build healthy and more virus-resistant bodies.
The center also has various programs dedicated to distributing food and educating people on healthy living. One of the programs, Food for Families, begins every morning with a food pickup from over 50 grocery stores and farmers markets across the nation. From there, the food is collected and separated into food boxes. It is then taken to the center's warehouse or delivered to people who are unable to physically travel or carry supplies.
As part of their mission to create a self-reliant people, the center offers nutrition classes as well. These classes take place right at the grocery store. A Manna Nutrition educator comes and helps qualifying individuals learn how to shop on a budget and purchase healthy food.
Since their founding in 1983, the center and volunteers like Solange have helped provided food for over a half a million households, and each year the center shares up to four million pounds of food with approximately 11,000 families. Because of the Manna Food Center's dedication, they are truly helping their community fight against hunger. To learn more about the organization or how to donate, visit the Manna Food Center website.
