doTERRA Wellness Advocate Organizes Fundraiser Race to Benefit Abuse Shelter
Gundlach Shelter acts as refuge for domestic abuse victims suffering from depression, anxiety, PTSD, and more.
PLEASANT GROVE, Utah, March 16, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Countless doTERRA Wellness Advocates choose to spend their free time giving back to their communities and serving those in need. One of these generous Wellness Advocates is Donica Dravillas. Along with her passion for sharing doTERRA essential oils, Donica has offered her time and enthusiasm to her community by founding and organizing the Keweenaw Path Fundraiser in Copper Harbor, Mich.
The race is now in its eleventh year, and involves Copper Harbor community members who want to run, walk, or bike to raise awareness about domestic violence, and benefit the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter Home. Donica has a long-standing relationship with the shelter, and the race proceeds go toward fulfilling the shelter's many needs.
The Gundlach Shelter is a refuge for women and children who have been victims of domestic violence. The shelter offers counseling, advocacy, and referrals to other agencies in order to help victims who are recovering from abusive situations and dealing with feelings of depression, anxiety, or fear. Unfortunately, many domestic abuse victims suffer long-term psychological damage, and even feelings of depression or anxiety due to their abuse. In many cases, victims experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which causes them to feel depressed or anxious long after they escape an abusive situation. Because of the physical and emotional damage that domestic violence causes, it is important for victims to receive help and counseling at places the like the Gundlach Shelter.
Donica first started the Keweenaw Path Fundraiser because of her connection to the shelter, and her desire to raise awareness about domestic violence. Initially, rather than running the race, Donica tried snowshoeing, in an effort to gain attention for her cause. She says, "Domestic violence often affects silent victims, and is a learned behavior which spreads across families and communities without acknowledgement. I felt as though my snowshoe journey would attract attention to this issue in our society and hit home for many people afraid to talk about it."
Because of the Keweenaw Path Fundraiser, many women and children will get the help they need to heal and move forward after escaping violent relationships and households. Thankfully, Donica's passion for helping those in harm's way has brought the community of Copper Harbor together each spring to run, walk, or bike for the sake of raising awareness.
