PLEASANT GROVE, Utah, Aug. 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Over the years, doTERRA Wellness Advocate Dawn-Marie Hanrahan has devoted much of her time and energy to volunteering, putting her heart into several important projects. Whether she was helping victims of domestic violence or fundraising for children living in poverty, Dawn-Marie has always made time to assist those in need, through her work with several nonprofit organizations.
In the past few years, Dawn-Marie has focused her efforts specifically to help the nonprofit Lutino Adunu a phrase which means, "children loved." When her close friend Shilla Adyero asked if she would help co-found the organization, Dawn-Marie agreed, knowing it would allow them to help a lot of people. Though she was living in the U.S. as an international scholar at the time, Shilla was born, raised, and educated during 23 years of brutal civil wars in Northern Uganda.
Because Shilla was raised in a war-torn community that did not value the education of girls, she felt motivated to start Lutino Adunu to help children that were growing up in the same situation. In spite of the brutality and harsh conditions of her youth, Shilla continually worked to pursue her dream of empowering girls through education.
Among many projects, one focus of Lutino Adunu is to help children affected by HIV and AIDS. Reports show that there were over one million people in Uganda living with HIV or AIDS, as of 2014. Uganda also struggles with related infections, hepatitis B being one of the most common viruses.
Along with suffering from the effects of HIV, AIDS, and hepatitis, many Ugandan children have experienced a lack of education. One of Lutino Adunu's first projects was to open a library in Northern Uganda to benefit both children and adults who had little access to academic resources. The organization focuses specifically on keeping girls in school, through their own scholarship program. Aside from their education program, Lutino Adunu has also started an adult literacy and micro finance class, specifically geared toward women to help improve their economic status in post-war Northern Uganda.
With others, Dawn-Marie and Shilla have worked tirelessly to bring education, improved health, and hope to children and women in Northern Uganda. Lutino Adunu's ongoing projects will help fulfill Dawn-Marie and Shilla's hope of giving Ugandan children a better, brighter future. To donate or get involved with Lutino Adunu, visit their website.
