doTERRA Donates to Support Williams Syndrome Association
Williams Syndrome can include cardiovascular disease, hypercalcemia, and more, but the Williams Syndrome Association is working to help and support individuals with this syndrome.
PLEASANT GROVE, Utah, March 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Recently, the Utah chapter of the Williams Syndrome Association held an auction to fundraise for individuals diagnosed with Williams Syndrome. In an effort to help the organization raise money, the doTERRA Healing Hands Foundation donated product for their auction. The proceeds of this event went towards helping the association provide medical research, family support, scholarships, and musical camps for those with Williams Syndrome.
Williams Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that affects the body's mental, emotional, and physical capabilities. Individuals with this disorder usually struggle with mild to severe cardiovascular disease. The cardiovascular disease results from a narrowing of the aorta and pulmonary arteries. Aside from cardiovascular disease, people with Williams Syndrome can also experience hypercalcemia, kidney and bladder abnormalities, and musculoskeletal issues.
Other issues that people with Williams Syndrome encounter can include anxiety, phobias, ADD, and ADHD. Because many have a symptom called hyperacusis (sensitive hearing), their sharp sense for hearing can cause them to lose focus easily which reflects ADD and ADHD tendencies. There are also mild to severe learning and cognitive disabilities associated with this syndrome.
However, despite their medical, emotional, and mental setbacks, these extraordinary individuals have many talents and gifts for being social, musical, and happy. People with this syndrome are often considered "overly friendly." Many of these individuals possess expressive language skills, have endearing personalities, and are extremely polite and social. Individuals with Williams Syndrome can also have a keen sense for music and instinctive musical abilities.
The Williams Syndrome Association works to raise awareness of this rare disorder and to support the individuals and families of those who have been affected by Williams Syndrome. They do this by providing programs, camps, and conventions that will help individuals with Williams Syndrome overcome their challenges and grow their strengths. In addition, the association provides education, scholarships, and support groups for those in need. Through the organization's dedication and the help of their volunteers, the Williams Syndrome Association is raising awareness and empowering those with Williams Syndrome.
