PLEASANT GROVE, Utah, Oct. 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Many teachers and parents are faced with the challenging task of motivating children to read, sometimes with little success. But, with a great amount of creativity and the motivation of their students' success, the teachers of the Temecula Valley Unified School District created a reading program that has their students flipping through the pages of their books.
The reading program is structured as a motive-based learning experience for elementary students. As part of the program, each student is asked to practice their writing skills and write a letter to a company, business, musician, or team that they are interested in. In these letters, they explain the reading program and ask for possible donations for their end-of-the-year auction. During the year, students receive points for every page of a book that they read. These points go towards the end-of-the-year silent auction where the products they have received from various donors are auctioned out to the students. When doTERRA International received a letter from a fifth grader in the Temecula school district, the company was excited to donate to such an educational and creative cause.
This program is especially inspiring because it is a fun program that caters to a variety of students' needs. Oftentimes, classes can have a range of reading levels and disabilities, and, for some students, reading difficulties can make their desire to read plummet. For example, if a student had a reading disability associated with ADHD, it may be hard for that learner with ADHD to focus and process written material and he or she might find it frustrating to read. However, through this motivating reading program, students with ADHD, dyslexia, or students who just have no desire to read at all can have an extra incentive to overcome frustrations and aspire to read more.
Because of the enthusiastic participation of the students and the encouragement of the teachers, the program has been a great success. One of the teachers at the elementary school found that with the "increased exposure to books, the students were not only motivated to read, but they liked reading. Since starting this program, the classes have averaged 35 books (approx. 6000 pages) during the school year." Through their program, the Temecula Valley Unified School District is motivating readers of all levels to learn to love reading.
