doTERRA Donates to 5K Race to Benefit Children With Autism
PLEASANT GROVE, Utah, Dec. 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- North Salt Lake's Spectrum Academy, a charter school for children with autism, will hold their annual "Turkey Trot" 5K race this November to raise funds for speech therapy, occupational therapy, and classrooms. Following the race, a raffle carnival will help further raise funds for the Academy's needs.
Remembering some of doTERRA International's community projects from years past, doTERRA Wellness Advocate, Susan Fleck, reached out to ask the company to donate gift baskets for the raffle. Susan hopes that the gift baskets will entice more people to buy raffle tickets—thus raising even more funds for the children of Spectrum Academy. Children and families have been invited to run or walk in the school's annual Turkey Trot on November 7th, and the gift baskets donated by doTERRA will be given as prizes at the raffle carnival following the race.
The Spectrum Academy is the only charter school in the state of Utah that focuses specifically on the learning needs of kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This neurodevelopmental disability causes difficulty with communicating, behavior, and social interactions. Because symptoms of other disorders like ADD and ADHD start to show at an early age, it can often be hard for parents and doctors to distinguish between these disorders and Autism Spectrum Disorder. ADHD and ASD share common symptoms, which is why one condition might be mistaken for the other, especially during the early stages. Some children may even experience a combination of ADHD and ASD, making it even more difficult to diagnose and treat.
With unique learning environments and special teaching techniques like those at The Spectrum Academy, children with autism can go through traditional schooling, just like other kids. The Spectrum Academy serves roughly 900 students in grades K-12, across the Wasatch front.
