Don't Sweat it, Prepare Now for the Sweltering Summer Ahead
Nicholson Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning offers tips to help homeowners prepare their air condition systems now before the summer heat arrives
FRAMINGHAM, Mass., May 18, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- With the mild winter and spring Framingham residents have had, forecasters are saying that this summer is going to be one of the hottest on record. Nicholson Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning wants to help homeowners be prepared early so when the temperatures heat up, their air conditioning systems will keep their homes cool and comfortable.
"Many people wait until the hottest day of the year to think about their air conditioning systems, they turn on the unit and discover it is not working properly," said Mike Nicholson, owner of Nicholson Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning. "Unfortunately, that is also the busiest time of the year for home service technicians. Homeowners may have to wait several hot days until the busy technicians can repair their system."
Nicholson recommends homeowners do a small amount of preventative maintenance in the spring, to make sure their air conditioning systems are working efficiently in the summer.
- Check your air filters. Many of the air conditioning system failures can be attributed to the filter. It is recommended that the filter be changed at least once every 60 days. If someone in the household has allergies or there are pets in the home, it is recommended to be changed more frequently, every 20-30 days.
- Inspect your outdoor unit and make sure it is clear of debris, leaves and brush. It is wise to keep at least 2-feet surrounding the system clear for air to flow freely and more efficiently.
- Check your indoor air registers. They sit at the end of each air supply duct and control the distribution of air in the room. The air registers are a very important part of the HVAC system. To improve the air flow in the home, keep them free from debris, dirt, rugs and furniture.
- Get an air conditioning tune-up from a licensed professional. It is similar to a tune-up on a car. Most do not think twice about taking their car in for a tune-up to have it inspected to make sure you do not have any unexpected breakdowns. Your home air conditioning unit needs the same type of maintenance to keep it running properly. A licensed professional will inspect your system, clean the coils, check hoses and refrigerant levels to make sure it is running properly to keep homeowners comfortable when the sizzling days return.
