NORWALK, Conn., Feb. 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- UBM Medica US announces that Diagnostic Imaging, a leading online community for medical imaging professionals, explores the radiologist's role in unnecessary imaging.
Typically, a referring physician submits an order asking for a specific study, but it's the radiologists who are getting the blame for unnecessary and wasteful imaging. With unnecessary imaging costing upward of $7 billion, radiologists need to get on the front lines and make sure imaging is used appropriately.
Radiologists need to educate their referring physicians to make sure the appropriate care is provided. In 2017, if appropriateness criteria or decision support is not consulted before an advanced imaging study is ordered, radiologists won't be reimbursed for that service, per federal legislation.
"The role of the radiologist is changing, sitting in the reading room and churning out studies won't cut it anymore. Radiologists need to be available to advise their colleagues on best practices regarding their specialty. We hope to guide radiologists through this transition," said Liza Haar, editor of Diagnostic Imaging.
