CHARLOTTE, N.C., Nov. 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Piedmont Natural Gas (NYSE: PNY) and Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina are urging "Don't forget the pets" as they invite the community to drop off food donations for Charlotte's neediest residents – and their pets – during Piedmont's fifth annual Community Food Drive Wednesday, Dec. 2.
Piedmont volunteers will collect donations from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the circle outside Piedmont's SouthPark headquarters at 4720 Piedmont Row Drive. Volunteers will unload cans, bags and boxes of non-perishable food and pet food items during the drive-through collection benefiting Second Harvest.
"Second Harvest is very excited about partnering with Piedmont Natural Gas again for this year's Community Food Drive," said Kay Carter, executive director of Second Harvest Food Bank. "We know that one in six people in the Charlotte region, including one in four children, struggle with hunger, and only with community participation in food drives like this can we meet the need."
"Sixty-five percent of American households have at least one pet, and that tells us that many of Charlotte's neediest residents are also challenged to keep their pets properly nourished," said Timothy Greenhouse, managing director of community relations for Piedmont Natural Gas. "Piedmont and Second Harvest want to feed the whole family this holiday season, and we need Charlotte's help to achieve this goal."
Wednesday's Community Food Drive is the centerpiece of Piedmont's fifth annual Week of Giving Nov. 30-Dec. 4. In addition, employees at Piedmont's Charlotte headquarters will host events throughout the week to benefit several nonprofit organizations, including YWCA of the Central Carolinas, Operation North State, Alexander Youth Network and Hospitality House of Charlotte.
Piedmont employees will also participate in events in Anderson, South Carolina, and Fayetteville, New Bern and Wilmington, North Carolina, and they will be part of the 62nd annual Piedmont Natural Gas Nashville Christmas Parade in Tennessee.
