Dominican University Announces the Appointment of Three Endowed Chairs
RIVER FOREST, Ill., Aug. 24, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Dominican University announces the holders of three endowed chairs for the 2011-2012 academic year. The chairs are acclaimed scholars in the fields of ethics, librarianship and interfaith dialogue who will engage the university community, teach classes and give public lectures.
Eboo Patel, founder of the Interfaith Youth Core, a Chicago-based nonprofit organization building a global interfaith youth movement, will serve as the university's Lund-Gill Chair. Patel is an adviser to the White House Office of Faith-Based Neighborhood Partnerships and serves on the Religious Advisory Council of the Council of Foreign Relations.
Patel writes "The Faith Divide" blog for the Washington Post and is the author of Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslim, the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation. He delivered the keynote speech at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum with Jimmy Carter and presented at the Clinton Global Initiative. A former Rhodes Scholar, Patel holds a doctorate in the sociology of religion from Oxford University.
At Dominican, Patel will teach a course in the history and theology of interfaith movements.
Mary Minow has been appointed Follett Chair in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Minow is a member of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, manager of the Stanford Copyright and Fair Use website and board member of the Electronic Privacy Information Center and the Freedom to Read Foundation.
Founder of the Library Law blog, Minow co-authored The Library's Legal Answer Book. She earned her master's degree in library science from the University of Michigan and law degree from Stanford University. Minow will teach in Dominican's doctoral and master's degree programs in library science, pursue research and engage the library community.
The Follett Chair is endowed through a gift from the Follett Corporation, a leading provider of services and products that empower schools, libraries, colleges and students.
Rev. Oliver F. Williams has been named the Brennan School of Business' Christopher Chair in Business Ethics. The director of the Notre Dame Center for Ethics and Religious Values in Business, Williams is the editor of Peace Through Commerce (Notre Dame Press, 2008) and is a director at the United Nations Global Compact Foundation, the world's largest voluntary corporate citizenship initiative addressing human rights, conflict prevention and contributions to world peace.
Williams is a Catholic priest and former Naval officer. He earned his doctorate from Vanderbilt University.
The Christopher Chair in Business Ethics was established by Doris and Jay Christopher to focus on ethical business practices through lectures, workshops and faculty and student initiatives.
