Dominican Republic Home to Golf Courses Worthy of the Pros

Golfers can revel in the country's numerous world-class courses and their amenities. Below are just some of the courses available throughout Dominican Republic, each varying both in difficulty and design.

Punta Cana and the east coast:

• In Punta Cana, the resort epicenter of the country, golfers can tee up at any number of courses. Puntacana Resort & Club is home to two courses of its own: P.B. Dye's La Cana is a challenging 27-hole course that weaves inland through tropical vegetation and offers spectacular sea views, with 14 oceanside holes. The resort also features Tom Fazio's picturesque Corales course, which showcases a cornucopia of natural wonders, taking golfers over cliffs, coves, lakes and quarries. Starting this year, Corales also played host to the first-ever Professional Golfers Association (PGA) tournament to be held in Dominican Republic.
• In Cap Cana, the Punta Espada Golf Club—designer Jack Nicklaus's first Signature Course in the country—routinely reaches the top of lists of the best courses in the region.
• A short distance from Punta Cana in Bávaro, Cocotal Golf & Country Club is situated on a former coconut plantation and offers three nine-hole courses designed by six-time Spanish champion José "Pepe" Gancedo.
• The Lakes Barceló Golf Course in Bávaro was the first golf course in the entire Punta Cana tourist region. Seventeen of its 18 holes feature inland lakes that are home to flamingos, ibis birds, turtles and enormous tarpons—perfect for the golfer that also loves wildlife.
• In Macao, add a splash of pink to your game at the Hard Rock Golf Club at Cana Bay. This 18-hole course designed by Jack Nicklaus is a challenge complete with flamingos at the final hole. Other natural highlights include lakes, rolling fairways and carefully preserved native flora and fauna.
• Punta Blanca Golf Club in Macao is three-time Major championship winner Nick Price's first design in the Caribbean. Enjoy greens surrounded by jungle and large natural lakes at this par 72 inland course within Macao's Punta Blanca residential development.

La Romana:

• La Romana is known as a must-visit golf destination in Dominican Republic, and it's home to courses worthy of the all-stars. Teeth of the Dog at Casa de Campo Resort is the course that put Dominican Republic on the map for world-class golfing. Designed by Pete Dye, the course is best known for its fifth hole—famous for both incredible difficulty and stunning views. Dye's other courses at the Casa de Campo Resort include The Links, a course reminiscent of Scottish fields with its small and rolling views, and Dye Fore, offering 360-degree views of the cliffs, the sea and the village of Altos de Chavón.

Santo Domingo and the south coast:

• In the capital city of Santo Domingo, city slickers can enjoy pristine golf courses just a short distance from the capital. Cayacoa Country Club is less than a half hour from Santo Domingo and full of lakes and hills that make for a challenging game.
• Gary Player's course in Juan Dolio at Guavaberry Golf & Country Club provides enchanting views of the neighboring tropical forest and nature preserve. It's a challenge not to be distracted by the crystal-clear waterfall at the 13th hole, or the 200,000-year-old coral rock formations at the final hole.

Puerto Plata and the north coast:

• On the country's north coast in Puerto Plata, golfers love the Playa Dorada Golf Course for its ease of access in the Playa Dorada Resort and its flat course.
• In Río San Juan, the Playa Grande Golf Course is a can't-miss. It's the final masterpiece of designer Robert Trent Jones, Sr., blending views of the Atlantic Ocean with the vegetation of thick and leafy palm trees. The course underwent an extensive renovation in 2015.
