Doggett Concrete Sponsors Award Winning NC State Engineering Projects

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Jan. 10, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Doggett Concrete sponsored two senior projects with NC State's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering during the 2017 school year. One of the projects was to put together a "Construction Wall Panel Layout & Assembly Program." 

A team of electrical and computer engineering students developed a program to optimize wall panel use and layout and another team built a working robotic model to lift wall panels in place. 

The implications are huge for Doggett Concrete's commercial and residential business. Doggett will be able to prepare and plan the best use of wall panels before a job is mobilized, track inventory across all jobs, and thereby plan upcoming jobs to reduce opportunity loss and wait time. 

"This program creates a Bill of Materials and provides an actual printed layout. The electrical engineers' robot will reduce fatigue and injury while increasing productivity," said Doggett Concrete's project estimator, Shelly Mony-Chhem. "With robotic assistance lifting heavy wall panels, we can guide and set panels in place with less-and-tear on our own crews."

The key to both programs is not speed, but better workflow, and in other words "smarter, not harder."  Utilizing both programs developed between Doggett Concrete and NC State ECE Senior Design students, the goal is to optimize planning and execution, identify problems such as wall panel availability across our backlog, and provide another way for office and production staff to communicate.

With the guidance and leadership of Doggett Concrete's very own, Doug Doggett and Shelly Mony-Chhem, students were able to program and build real-world products – and happened to win first place for the ECE Senior Design projects in the “Industry Automation” category on Design Day on December 1, 2017.  Doggett Concrete hopes to continue developing these programs in the spring of 2018, and eventually begin using from Estimating to Production.
