WASHINGTON, Dec. 17, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- This weekend, the Senate is set to vote on the DREAM Act – a bill that provides a path to citizenship for undocumented young people if they pursue a higher education or serve in our armed forces. Before the vote, DNC Chairman Tim Kaine released the following statement urging the Senate to pass the important bill:

"Not only is the DREAM Act a commonsense bill that will strengthen the American military and economic security, it has the backing of leaders from both sides of the aisle, the President, Department of Defense and the Secretaries of Homeland Security and Education. The Dream Act would quite simply give young people – people who have been raised to love America as their own country and were brought here at no fault of their own – the opportunity to become an American citizen by serving in our armed forces or pursuing a higher education.
"It is time to pass this bill. I urge the Senate to follow the House of Representative's lead in voting to give these young people the opportunity to achieve the American dream. This bill has received support of Senate Republicans in the past and there is no reason for it to not receive bipartisan support now. I look forward to the Senate passing this landmark piece of legislation that will make America safer and more prosperous by tapping into the energy of a new generation of young immigrants, and urge all Senators on both sides of the aisle to do what is right by voting in favor of the bill."
