"As we celebrate what would have been Cesar Chavez's 83rd birthday, we pay homage to a leader who devoted his life to service and whose legacy is still with us today. Cesar Chavez was a pillar of the American labor movement, a champion of education, and a community organizer. He stood for social justice and workplace rights.
"Ever since the age of 10, Cesar Chavez migrated throughout fields across the Southwest and learned the hard work and adversity that comes with being a farm worker. He proved to be a leader ever since he founded several organizations, including the National Farm Workers Association, which would become the United Farm Workers of America. He used his leverage as a national leader to fight for better conditions for farm workers, who faced poverty and disenfranchisement.
"Today I am proud to say that Democrats are fighting alongside President Obama for the well-being of all Americans, in a spirit not unlike that of Cesar Chavez's. We honor the legacy of leaders like Cesar Chavez through action. Since President Obama came into office, Democrats have passed health insurance reform legislation to insure 32 million Americans – including 9 million Latinos – and protect the insured from insurance company abuses. We have brought the economy back from the brink of depression – an economic landscape that hurt our most vulnerable workers. We have single-handedly stood up for unemployment benefits and championed the Lilly Ledbetter Act, among others.
"There is no doubt that there is more to do. The road ahead includes Wall Street reform, immigration reform, and energy legislation. Even if the partisan environment in Washington does not favor the causes of Cesar Chavez, Democrats are committed to fighting on behalf of the American worker. We will continue to fight for the legacy of Cesar Chavez and other leaders of the past. We will fight to ensure that America is a fertile ground for the future Cesar Chavez generation."
