DMVA Announces Grants to Provide Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Treatment for Veterans
HARRISBURG, Pa., March 24, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) has selected four 501(c)3 non-profit organizations to receive $500,000 in grants for treatment of veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and co-occurring disorders.
"For many of our country's brave warriors who have served in theater, some of their toughest challenges don't come on the battlefield – they come months and sometimes years after they come home," said Brig. Gen. Jerry Beck Jr., the state's deputy adjutant general for veterans affairs. "These grants will ensure that many more Pennsylvania veterans receive the assistance they need to fight their own battle with PTSD and associated disorders."
The need for additional funds to treat PTSD is significant. DMVA received competitive grant applications from 27 organizations requesting a total of $3.95 million in funding for PTSD services and programs benefiting veterans.
Grants are being awarded to:
- Balanced Heart Healing Center, Wexford (Allegheny County): $200,000 to provide treatment services to women veterans with PTSD and co-occurring disorders through a heal-train-hire process.
- Healing Ajax, Philadelphia (Philadelphia County): $180,000 to combine peer support with evidence-based, trauma-informed care for an effective strength-based approach to assist veterans with PTSD and other disorders.
- Meghan Shortt Wilent Foundation, New Hope (Bucks County): $20,000 to provide no-cost therapeutic treatment to veterans with PTSD and co-occurring disorders.
- The Veterans Group, Philadelphia (Philadelphia County): $100,000 to empower veterans with PTSD and addiction challenges.
All grants are contingent upon the completion of a fully executed grant agreement.
