DiViNetworks Reports Over 100% Spike in Bandwidth Consumption at Columbian ISP During World Cup Matches
None-the-less, Traffic Performance and QoS During On-line Live Events is Maintained
TEL AVIV, Israel, June 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
DiViNetworks, the data delivery network service provider for ISPs and Network Operators, monitored the spikes in network traffic behavior during the early matches of the World Cup.
More fans are viewing live sports events over a non-broadcast infrastructure creating spikes in bandwidth consumption of over 100%. Even though only 0.1% of viewers are currently watching video streaming over the Internet, the effect on an ISP network is dramatic. As more and more users are turning to use the Internet as their main channel to consume media, on-line traffic demands will continue to increase for ISP network providers.
Network traffic consumption jumped by more than 100% at a Columbian ISP where only a few thousands of its customers chose to watch the World Cup matches over the Internet.

During the Uruguay vs. Costa Rica match, demand for bandwidth more than doubled from 3Gbps to 7Gbps even though the number of users did not increase.

Since the Internet was not designed for broadcast media, unicast live event video streaming models clog the network and can cause any other traffic types on these links to be delayed and interrupted.
DiViNetworks turn unicast into pseudo-multicast over the expensive network links. DiViNetworks detects, in real-time, multiple unicast sessions that transmit the same data, combines them into a single session over the international link and separates them back to individual sessions as they reach the other side of the expensive link.
The users who watched the Uruguay vs. Costa Rica match over the Internet received excellent, smooth quality video, without overloading international links and without creating interference for other Internet users on the same links.
The red part of the graph below is the actual traffic passing over the international link. The green part, previously clogging the link, now disappears from the link, and re-appears on the other side. Thousands of unicasts turn into a single pseudo-multicast with DiViNetworks.
