Distracted driving is anything that diverts the driver's attention from their primary focus, driving. While all forms of driver distractions are extremely dangerous, texting while driving is among the worst, as it involves all three types of distraction, manual, visual, and cognitive. In 2014, 3,129 people were killed and 431,000 were injured in distracted driving crashes. Distracted driving endangers drivers, passengers, and bystanders.
This month, The United States Department of Transportation's (DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), California Highway Patrol (CHP), the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), and Impact Teen Drivers (ITD) have partnered together to help end distracted driving.
All around the country, these government and law enforcement agencies have partnered to promote a simple message. Distracted driving kills. This epidemic can be stopped.
Rear View Safety is inviting everyone to take the pledge against distracted driving. The pledge can be downloaded here. While taking the pledge is a great first step, sharing resources from The National Safety Council and www.distraction.gov, the official U.S. Government website for distracted driving, also heightens awareness.
Rear View Safety is not a stranger to the world of safety enhancing products for drivers and vehicles of all types. Recently they introduced GoVue, the first back up camera smartphone app for the popular iOS and Android operating systems. Once the smartphone and camera system are connected via a short-range Wi-Fi network, video information from the rear of the vehicle is transmitted to the smartphone in real time. This eliminates the need for a primary monitor to be installed into the dashboard of the vehicle. The GoVue back up camera application for iOS and Android devices is currently available for free download in the Google Play Store, the iTunes App Store.
Rear View Safety has long been a leader in vehicle safety solutions. The commercial backup camera provider is also available on Facebook, on Twitter, on LinkedIn and maintains a Road Safety Resource site.
