Discovery En Espanol Wraps-Up Hispanic Heritage Month with an Impactful Original Production "La Ruta De La Muerte"
The documentary highlights the brutal reality faced by the thousands who attempt to cross Mexico in order to arrive in the United States
MIAMI, Oct. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The route traveled by thousands of migrants through Mexico each year in an effort to reach the United States is considered to be one of the most dangerous around the world, characterized by hazards and often unspeakable acts of violence. La Ruta de la Muerte, a new original production by Discovery en Espanol, accompanies a group of migrants on this dangerous trek, while vividly capturing their journey. The special premieres on Sunday, October 16 at 9 PM E/P.
On August 2010, 72 migrant workers were kidnapped and murdered at a ranch in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico. This bloodbath exposed the reality faced by thousands of migrants every year. Via reenactments and with exclusive access to the scene of the crime and the testimony of one of the survivors, La Ruta de la Muerte retraces the events that led to this massacre.
Discovery en Espanol's cameras follow in the steps of a group of migrants, among them Marco, a Guatemalan on his third attempt to reach the United States, who was an eye witness to one of these mass kidnappings; and Ismael a young man from Honduras whose sister was forcefully taken right in front of him.
The special also highlights the work the Mexican Navy is undertaking in this area, as well showcases the analysis and opinions of key figures such as Father Alejandro Solalinde, who heads the Arriaga shelter in the state of Oaxaca; Salvador Beltran, Commissioner of the National Institute on Migration; Fernando Batista, Representative of the Commission on Human Rights; and Felipe Gonzalez a representative for the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
La Ruta de la Muerte is an original production by Discovery en Espanol under the direction of Michela Giorelli and Irune Ariztoy, with the assistance of Pacha Films, under the direction of Guillermo Galdos and Luis del Valle.
