Disappointing Unemployment Numbers Should Prompt Shift In Priorities Toward Protecting and Creating Jobs, Not Killing Jobs
HARRISBURG, Pa., June 3, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Rick Bloomingdale said today that the disappointing unemployment numbers clearly indicate the need for the Administration and the State Legislature to focus on policies that create and protect jobs, not policies that kill jobs and attack unemployed working families.
"Today's disappointing unemployment report underscores the need for our elected officials at all levels of Government, including the State Legislature, to shift the focus away from spending cuts and other job killing provisions, which will throw thousands of more workers on the unemployment line and further threaten our economic recovery. Instead, they should be concentrating on both protecting and creating jobs as well as passing legislation that helps unemployed working families and continues to stimulate economic growth," Bloomingdale said.
"We need an economic stimulus program for Pennsylvania that puts people back to work and keeps people working. And we need to continue to help unemployed working families until there are jobs. This is not the time to cut and deny unemployment benefits," Bloomingdale declared.
"Unemployment Compensation benefits provide the most effective economic stimulus. That's because every dollar of unemployment benefits is spent for the essentials of life: food, clothing, the rent and transportation to help find another job," Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Frank Snyder added. "It's one of the most effective ways the government can stimulate the economy and promote economic recovery, much more so than tax breaks for wealthy corporations. Clearly this is a jobless recovery. Shame on those lawmakers who seek to dismantle unemployment benefits in a jobless recovery," Snyder declared.
