SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill., March 21, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- A new operational headquarters for the agency that plans, develops, delivers and operates the military's command-and-control capabilities, including defense of secure IT infrastructure in 42 countries, has been honored as among the year's finest engineering projects in Illinois.
The new Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Global Operations Headquarters won a Special Achievement Award — tops in the Building/Technology Systems category — from the Illinois chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies during its 2018 Engineering Excellence Awards.
Burns & McDonnell designed and provided construction-phase services for the headquarters, delivered for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District ahead of schedule and $7 million under the original budget. The 165,000-square-foot facility features administrative areas, a data center and a 20,000-square-foot operations center. Located within 41,000 square feet of building designed to meet Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) standards, the operations center uses a gigabit passive optical network (GPON) and is equipped with secure monitors that can run on the same feed or independently of one another. The operations center also is fortified to act as a severe weather shelter for all employees and withstand winds of more than 200 mph.
Previously, the headquarters received a design Merit Award from the U.S. Air Force, which cited the project's outstanding resource efficiency and visual appeal. It also has been honored as the Top Executed Project by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and is certified LEED Silver for new construction through the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program.
Other Burns & McDonnell projects winning 2018 Engineering Excellence Awards from ACEC chapters: Big Canyon Environmental Restoration Project (Honor Award, California), Integration of RCRA Corrective Action with Facility Demolition for Loveland Products (Merit Award, Nebraska), Stillwater Energy Center Reciprocating Engine Project (Honor Award, Oklahoma), Union Station Kansas City Westward Expansion (Grand Award, Missouri), and West Blue River Interceptor (Honor Award, Missouri).
