Diplomat Celebrates 2nd Successful Summer with its Internship and Fellowship Programs
The nation's largest independent specialty pharmacy celebrates the close of their Internship and Fellowship programs with a reflection of the 2015 summer.
FLINT, Mich., Aug. 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Diplomat Pharmacy, Inc. (NYSE: DPLO) announced today the ending of another successful summer Internship and Fellowship program. Students were hired from around the country for the 12-week programs, and this summer Diplomat took on 10 Fellows and 25 Interns for hands-on experience in select departments.
"This group of Diplomat Fellows and Interns has far exceeded our expectations," said Diplomat CEO and Chairman Phil Hagerman. "We knew there was an interest in summer programs like these, but the caliber of students and the impact they've had here are nothing short of inspiring."
The summer programs at Diplomat allow students to work on challenging projects with some of the best minds in the business. Although the requirements differ across departments, Interns are given the freedom to explore other areas of interest all while making valuable contacts and learning more about possible future career paths.
"Not only am I learning about disease states and treatments that are not the core focus of most pharmacy school curricula, I am also learning about the applications of business, finance, marketing and more—all related to pharmacy," said Lisa Chen, an Education and Quality intern. "Everything I see and do here is a skill that could be applicable to different situations in my future as a pharmacist."
Along with the Internship program, one of the highlights of Diplomat's summer offerings is the Fellowship for Social Impact. The Fellowship provided 10 individuals with the resources to develop a program, proposal or organization they felt would make the greatest impact within an urban community. The young people spent their entire summer living together in downtown Flint, developing ideas and meeting with community leaders to fine-tune their plans and tailor them to an inner-city environment. The fellows came from schools throughout Michigan and nationwide, including the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Oakland University, Wayne State University, Olivet College, Aquinas, Western Michigan University and Howard University in Washington, D.C.
One of the Fellows, Andrew Koprowski, created a 'back-to-school backpack program' which provided over 100 low-income children school supplies to start the new year.
"Partnering with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint to create the backpack program has been an inspirational journey," Koprowski said. "I am proud to serve students from the Flint community and provide them with essential school supplies. Being prepared is the first step toward academic success."
The Fellows' projects ranged across a wide variety of topics, including:
- The development of a mobile app to showcase downtown Flint
- A career workshop for males with a criminal record
- A projected resource center for those looking to start a new business
- Female empowerment through entrepreneur seminars
- A plan for mentorship programs
- A proposal for a youth community arts expo
- A plan to address abandoned houses and homelessness
The Fellows also completed more than 200 hours of community service over the 12-week span.
"We believe students will be interested in the energy here," Hagerman said. "We believe in making an impact in the lives of our patients, our clients and in our community."
Interns and Fellows do not gain course credit. However, a certificate of achievement will be provided.
