UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., Sept. 2, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- For the first time, The Dining Room at The Nittany Lion Inn has received Wine Spectator magazine's 2016 "Best of" Award of Excellence—the highest wine list award achieved in the history of the Inn.

Although The Dining Room has been a Wine Spectator "Award of Excellence" winner every year since 2002, this is the first year that its extensive wine list has achieved "Best of" status. Wine Spectator cited wines from California, Oregon, France, and Italy as strengths of The Dining Room's wine list.
The Dining Room joins an exclusive group of dining establishments whose wine lists have earned this honor: Only 18 restaurants in Pennsylvania—and no other establishments in State College—hold the "Best of" designation.
"We are very excited about this award," said Sean Caviston, restaurant operations manager and wine director at The Nittany Lion Inn. "We truly have one of the best wine lists in the state."
Over the past several years Caviston has devoted much time and energy into improving the level and scope of offerings on The Dining Room's wine list, as well as developing wine education opportunities for guests. One of these opportunities is the popular "Tastes of the World: A Wine Dinner Series," a personalized culinary experience that gives guests the opportunity to learn about the cuisine and wines of different regions of the world as they wine and dine. Recent wine dinners have introduced guests to wine regions in Portugal, France's Rhone Valley, and South Africa.
"Through these wine dinners, we want our guests, whether they have a vast or a limited knowledge of wine, to gain information that will make buying, serving, sharing, and drinking wine more enjoyable," Caviston said.
According to the Wine Spectator website, "Best of" awards are given to wine lists that "display excellent breadth across multiple winegrowing regions and/or significant vertical depth of top producers, along with superior presentation. Typically offering 350 or more selections, these restaurants are destinations for serious wine lovers, showing a deep commitment to wine, both in the cellar and through their service team."
All Wine Spectator award winners are featured in the magazine's August 31 issue, available at newsstands.
