2011-2016 Asia Digital English Language Learning Market Abstract
The convergence of large-scale digitization efforts in schools, government-mandated English language learning initiatives, and strong consumer demand for Mobile Learning products are driving this spectacular, sustained growth throughout the region.
As schools in Asia migrate to digital content, a massive amount of commercial, open source, and print-based English language learning content will be transferred to interactive digital platforms. "South Korea has mandated that all primary and secondary instructional content be 100% digital by 2015," said Sam S. Adkins, Ambient Insight Chief Research Officer. "This trend represents a significant revenue opportunity for suppliers that offer conversion services."
"Mandates for compulsory English language learning in schools, such as those initiated in 2011 by Japan and Vietnam, have led to a shortage of English language teachers in several countries and drives demand for self-paced products and live-remote tutoring," added Ambient Insight CEO, Tyson Greer.
In the Asia region, the current digital English language learning revenues are concentrated in five learning technology product types: Self-paced eLearning, Digital Reference-ware (eTextbooks), Collaboration-based Learning, Mobile Learning apps, and Mobile Learning value-added services (VAS). In 2011, Self-paced eLearning products generated the highest revenues for suppliers. The picture will be quite different by 2016.
"The astonishing growth of the use of learning technology to teach English in countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam are good examples of emerging markets that, since 2009, have become vibrant revenue opportunities for suppliers," noted Adkins. Leading the pack, China and Malaysia have experienced more than twice the worldwide aggregate growth rate.
Over 130 suppliers operating in specific countries in Asia are cited in this regional report to help international suppliers identify local partners, distributors, resellers, and potential merger and acquisition opportunities.
