DigiPath's Dr. Cindy Orser Speaks on the Importance of Adopting Cannabis Standards August 14, 2014
LAS VEGAS, Aug. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- DigiPath, Inc. (OTCBB andOTCQB: DIGP), a digital pathology solution provider that is rapidly expanding into the cannabis testing and education markets, announced today that Cindy Orser, Ph.D. will lead an introductory webinar on the importance of standards in the cannabis industry on Thursday, August 14, 2014. The key issue of adopting standards is the second in a five-week series of webinars collectively titled: "Cannabis 2.0: Making It in the Emerging Marijuana Industry," which begins on August 7th.
As Chief Science Officer at DigiPath, Dr. Orser is creating a replicable testing environment with validated protocols to ensure cannabis and cannabis-based products are safe. She will also be developing standards and biomarkers to clearly distinguish products derived from specific cannabis strains concomitant with determining the bioavailability of the cannabinoids found in the product.
A serial entrepreneur, Dr. Orser has launched five small biotech ventures during the last ten years. These ventures include Big Sky Biosystems Inc., which offers scientific, technical, regulatory and strategic affairs consulting to the molecular and medical diagnostics industry, and CB Cures LLC, which was working to develop novel formulations of cannabis extracts for clinical endpoints and a THC biosensor for roadside sobriety testing.
During her hour-long presentation, Dr. Orser will discuss how the chemical composition of each strain of cannabis varies, and how each plant's cannabinoid and terpenoid profiles may be beneficial in relieving symptoms associated with chronic disease. She will also examine the need for setting industry standards and processes for cultivating cannabis, converting cannabis to cannabis-based products, and testing cannabis and cannabis-based products.
"Many people are looking for an opportunity to benefit from a wave of recent legal victories in the cannabis market, but most people don't know what to do," said Mike "Zappy" Zapolin, Cannabis 2.0's host and moderator of this year's Milken Global Conference panel titled The Highs and Lows of the Cannabis Economy. "This course gives them the tools they need to immediately jump in and be successful."
Zapolin points out that for the majority of the last century, prohibition kept cannabis underground, but now, the industry is shifting away from people who were willing to break the law and sell drugs for cash to licensed companies with banking relationships and publicly traded stocks. And it's not just entrepreneurs—scientists, doctors, and seasoned business executives are increasingly entering the industry as cannabis commerce relocates from dark alleyways to Main Street.
"Dr. Orser's webinar is a great way for people to meet her and learn about our work to improve the cannabis industry," said Steve Barbee, CEO of DigiPath, Inc. "We strongly believe education holds the key to its transformation, and we are set to lead the industry on that front."
