DigiPath Explores Cannabis in Midterm Election Politics in New TNMNews Segment
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Marijuana News, a subsidiary of DigiPath, Inc. (OTCBB andOTCQB: DIGP), has just released its special midterm election edition of its popular, unbiased cannabis news program on www.TNMNews.com.
In this fourth TNMNews segment, hosts Todd Denkin and Jen Gentile discuss the current political and economic climate of the American cannabis industry with Medical Marijuana 411 cofounder Sam Sabzehzar, Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) director Karen O' Keefe, and former international cannabis smuggler and Hemp Inc. founder Bruce Perlowin.
The lineup starts with Sam Sabzehzar, co-founder of the cannabis news website MedicalMarijuana411.com, proclaiming that cannabis is a plant—not a drug—and everyone's body needs 65 mg of phytocannabinoids every day. Because of this, he says, the War on Drugs is a War on People.
Sabzehzar is a filmmaker and political strategist who has traveled the world using art as a platform to help share stories that change people's lives by inspiring them to shift their attitudes and actions in a more positive direction. In the interview, he discusses his alignment with Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, an organization—like Medical Marijuana 411—that believes prohibition is far more dangerous that the thing that it is designed to prohibit.
Next, Karen O' Keefe, attorney and legislative analyst with the MPP, discusses the struggles patients have in areas where legislators have enacted unworkable laws, such as confining grow operations to academic facilities (which will not break federal laws) or requiring a "prescription," although federal law disallows doctors from prescribing cannabis.
O'Keefe gives a rundown on upcoming cannabis ballot measures:
- Voters in Alaska will decide on Ballot Measure 2, which would regulate marijuana similarly to the way alcohol is regulated in the state
- Oregon's citizens will vote on Measure 91 to allow the recreational use of cannabis in the state
- Florida's Right to Medical Marijuana Initiative, Amendment 2, is a constitutional amendment that would need 60 percent of vote to pass
O'Keefe says it has already been a great year for pro-cannabis legislation, pointing to Minnesota becoming the 22nd medical marijuana state last May, Maryland passing two laws reducing the penalties for cannabis possession and allowing the operation of third-party dispensaries, and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signing a limited medical marijuana bill into law last July.
Founder of Hemp Inc. and counterculture legend Bruce Perlowin, a.k.a. the "King of Pot," wraps up the program with a segment discussing Wall Street's lust for cannabis industry stocks. Perlowin says enthusiasm for investing in cannabis rivals the exuberance experienced during the dot-com era.
Perlowin is a marijuana insider who served nine years in federal prison for smuggling thousands of pounds of marijuana into the United States in the 1970s and 80's. He talks about his previous company, Medical Marijuana Inc., being the first publically traded company in the medical marijuana sector and was also the subject of the highly rated documentary Marijuana Inc. – Inside America's Pot Industry on CNBC.
