NORWALK, Conn., Sept. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Diageo North America, a global leader in beverage alcohol, announced that it has received an Environmental Merit Award from the New England office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its exceptional work and commitment to the environment. The award was presented during a special ceremony at Faneuil Hall in Boston, MA on September 12.
EPA's annual Environment Merit Awards recognizes outstanding environmental advocates who have made significant contributions toward preserving and protecting natural resources. Diageo North America was awarded for progress achieved as a participant in the EPA's SmartWay program, which helps companies advance supply chain sustainability by measuring, benchmarking and improving freight transportation efficiency.
"Diageo is dedicated to reducing the company's environmental impact and one of our goals is to decrease freight-related carbon emissions significantly," said Gian St. Angelo, Vice President of Customer Logistics, Diageo North America. "Tracking emissions through the EPA SmartWay program has enabled us to achieve measureable, sustainable and lasting environmental results."
Diageo North America enrolled in the EPA SmartWay program in 2010 to reduce freight-related emissions and by 2018 has achieved 95% of ton-miles shipped with SmartWay-certified carriers. Through monthly analysis, Diageo can accurately pinpoint areas of success and areas for improvement, allowing the company to reduce its carbon dioxide impact at a faster rate. Based on monthly reporting, as of 2018, Diageo has decreased its carbon emissions 61% since 2015.
When choosing carriers, a key deciding factor for Diageo is whether the carrier is EPA SmartWay-certified, and the company actively supports the certification of carriers that are not certified.
