"We are pleased to assist cities in their preservation efforts by awarding these annual federal dollars," said Brian Conway, State Historic Preservation Officer. "By receiving these grants through the CLG program, both Detroit and Boyne City can continue their drive toward preserving Michigan's history."
The City of Detroit will be receiving three awards: The first award of $24,000 is to be used to hire a consultant to prepare an updated Belle Isle National Register of Historic Places nomination, which will expand the district to include the Detroit Yacht Club and will establish Belle Isle's national level of historic significance. The second award of $45,000 will be used to hire both an architect to prepare written plans and specifications to re-roof the Belle Isle Aquarium and a contractor to perform the work. And the third award of $20,000 will be used to hire a consulting team to prepare a Rehabilitation Master Plan for the Yamasaki Reflecting Pools and Historic Landscape plan at the Helen L. DeRoy Auditorium at Wayne State University.
Boyne City will be receiving an award of $21,000 that will be used to hire a consultant to prepare a Boyne City Downtown National Register of Historic Places district nomination.
Certified Local Governments are counties, townships or cities that partner with the State Historic Preservation Office and the National Park Service to preserve their historic and cultural resources. CLGs demonstrate ongoing commitment to historic preservation through the enactment of a historic preservation ordinance, the formation of a historic district commission, the ongoing survey and designation of properties, and public education.
CLG grants are awarded annually on a competitive basis. All grants must be matched with local funds or donations and are available on a reimbursement basis only. Project activities must have measurable results. The State Historic Preservation Office welcomes innovative proposals that promote historic preservation. The intent of the CLG grant program is to augment rather than replace existing local financial commitment to historic preservation activities. Grants are announced each May.
