MCLEAN, Va., Feb. 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- USA TODAY announced today that Derek Murphy has been named executive vice president and general manager of USA TODAY. The announcement was made by Larry Kramer, president and publisher of USA TODAY. Murphy, previously general manager of multicultural media at AOL Huffington Post Media Group, will manage day-to-day operations of USA TODAY and report to Kramer.
"USA TODAY is looking toward the future and Derek's role will be to manage the transition of USA TODAY to a digital-first enterprise," said Kramer. Murphy is an enterprising business development and operations executive with deep experience building brands and growing traditional and digital businesses in the financial services, media and entertainment industries. As general manager of multicultural media at AOL Huffington Post Media Group he led the overall strategy, audience development, operational and business performance for the launch and management of several new multicultural websites and related content and advertising partnerships. Murphy joined Huffington Post in 2009 as senior vice president, business development, where he was responsible for structuring strategic partnerships to scale the business and deliver material growth in content offerings, brand presence, audience engagement and revenues.
Prior to joining Huffington Post, Murphy was vice president, business development and operations for CNN News Group where he developed strategic content syndication, marketing and distribution partnerships for CNN digital and select CNN television network properties. He also advised Madison Square Garden and Ticketmaster in the launch and marketing of TicketExchange, an online secondary ticketing service for the New York Knicks and New York Rangers, and was a founding member and head of sponsorship marketing in American Express' Global Advertising and Brand Management Group.
Murphy has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering and Management from Tufts University and an MBA degree from the Wharton School. He is on the leadership board of the Council of Urban Professionals and served for several years on the boards of Brewster Academy and South Orange Performing Arts Center. Murphy and his wife are the proud parents of three teenagers.
