Department of Public Welfare Recognizes Contributions of Pennsylvanians with Developmental Disabilities

HARRISBURG, Pa., March 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Highlighting the many contributions of people living with developmental disabilities, acting Secretary of Public Welfare Harriet Dichter today recognized Developmental Disability Awareness month and pledged continued support for those most in need.

"Pennsylvanians living with a disability are valued members of our communities -- our friends, neighbors and co-workers -- who find fulfillment living everyday lives," said acting Secretary Dichter. "With continued developmental disability services and supports, Pennsylvanians can pursue their dreams and contribute to society in a meaningful way."

Between one- and three-percent of all Pennsylvanians are living with a developmental disability, cutting across the lines of racial, ethnic, educational, social and economic backgrounds.  As access to early interventions, education and home and community-based services continue to grow, more Pennsylvanians and their families are finding greater opportunities to develop relationships and be integrated into their home communities.

Throughout March, the Department of Public Welfare has numerous activities planned which celebrate the life and achievements of those living well with a disability.
