More than 61,000 veterans each year will experience the benefits of integrated technologies such as nurse call, wireless Internet access and heating and cooling systems, which help clinicians provide better care in more comfortable patient environments. For example, nurses can stay at the patient's bed side longer with mobile access to clinical records, such as medication. Additionally, the integrated technology will lower energy and operational costs for the VA. The new facility is designed to achieve LEED® Silver certification, a prestigious standard in green building design.
Kiewit-Turner (KT), a joint venture comprised of Kiewit Building Group and Turner Construction Company, will manage construction of the more than one-million square foot, 182-bed facility. The design and construction process will leverage the $70 million Johnson Controls technology contract to create a connected medical environment where more than 15 clinical, business and building systems communicate.
"Our veterans deserve the high level of care delivered through technology integration -- it might not be visible but it creates a better experience for patients," said Guenther Dziuvenis, vice president and general manager, Johnson Controls. "Rooms are heated or cooled to patient preferences and nurses are able to spend more time delivering care thanks to wireless communication tools that add up to better care at a lower cost."
Technology contracting lowers initial construction costs and decreases long-term operational and utility expenses by converging individual systems into a single networking solution. The VA will save critical resources by eliminating the need to manage multiple, duplicate or discrete systems under various vendors, contracts and proprietary protocols in the constantly-evolving technology marketplace.
Johnson Controls will employ veterans to complete the technology integration portion of the project. The company will achieve more than 20 percent subcontracted dollars to veteran and service-disabled veteran owned small businesses.
The new hospital will replace the Denver Medical Center for the Eastern Colorado Health Care System. The medical center will include a 30-bed spinal cord injury center, 30-bed community living center, research building, central utility plant and parking structures.
