NEW YORK, Nov. 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Mutual of America announced today that Alzheimer's Community Care's Dementia-Specific Practicum for Nursing Student Program was named a Merit Finalist award recipient in the 2015 Community Partnership Award competition.
Alzheimer's Community Care was started in 1996 by a group of donors, caregivers and community leaders who recognized that Alzheimer's patients and their families lacked access to tools and services that could enable them to provide home-based care for their loved one and to delay or avoid costly nursing home placement.
In 2014, Alzheimer's Community Care established a partnership with Palm Beach Atlantic University's School of Nursing to pilot the Dementia-Specific Practicum for its Nursing Student program, a landmark collaboration that provides training for community-based, dementia-specific care. To date, 55 junior-level registered nurses have participated, which pairs classroom experience with practical experience, delivering hands-on patient care at one of Alzheimer's Community Care's nine specialized Alzheimer's Day Care Centers.
"Nurses who graduate from these programs will be at the forefront of community-based care, with the training needed to make a tangible difference in the quality of life of patients with Alzheimer's and their families," said Mary M. Barnes, President and Chief Executive Officer of Alzheimer's Community Care.
