Demand Is Strong for Psychiatric Inpatient Services, NAPHS Annual Survey Finds
WASHINGTON, Aug. 9, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The need for psychiatric services in inpatient hospitals continues to grow, according to the latest annual survey from the National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems (NAPHS) released today. The 2016 NAPHS Annual Survey reports 2014 data that was collected in 2015 from NAPHS-member organizations. (With this edition, the survey has been renamed to reflect the year of publication.) Data were analyzed and reported by Dobson DaVanzo & Associates, LLC, Vienna, VA.
"This year's survey shows that the need for psychiatric services in inpatient hospitals continues to grow," said NAPHS President/CEO Mark Covall in releasing the survey. "Trended admissions have increased over the past year (while length of stay slightly decreased, keeping total inpatient days of care constant). At the same time, intensive outpatient services, such as partial hospitalization, continue to accelerate as well," he said. The average number of partial hospitalization visits increased 7.8% from 2013 to 2014.
To accommodate for increased utilization in inpatient facilities, the NAPHS Annual Survey reports that the number of set-up and staffed beds increased from 2013 to 2014. While the inpatient occupancy decreased by 0.1%, the number of set-up and staffed beds in inpatient facilities increased 3.6% from 2013 to 2014.
The report provides two distinct views of behavioral healthcare delivery. One chapter provides national averages to give a snapshot of members' experiences in the reporting year. This chapter also presents selected data by set-up-and-staffed bed categories to help organizations compare their own experiences to those of facilities of a similar size. Another chapter provides a trend analysis that looks at changes from year to year in NAPHS-member hospitals and residential treatment centers reporting over a two-year period. Data drawn from other major studies is also presented in the Annual Survey to provide context on the prevalence of behavioral conditions.
