Delta Children's Products CEO Joe Shamie Presented 200 New Baby Cribs To The Hon. Cory Booker At City Hall For A "Newark Now" Mother's Day Event Tomorrow

NEW YORK, May 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Earlier today, Joe Shamie, CEO of Delta Children's Products, the world's largest manufacturer of nursery furniture presented 200 new cribs to Mayor Cory Booker of Newark, NJ for distribution at the annual "Newark Now" event, taking place tomorrow. The cribs will be given to local moms in need.

Mr. Shamie, a recent K.I.D.S. humanitarian honoree and the Toys "R" Us 2012 vendor of the year award winner, met with Mayor Booker to discuss Delta Children's "Safe Sleep" initiative—an awareness campaign for parents teaching how to create a safe sleeping environment for babies. Mr. Shamie, a long time safe sleep advocate, noted that he "wants to make sure parents of children under 2 years of age are informed of the dangers of used cribs." As a board member of the JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association), Mr. Shamie does not recommend co-sleeping and notes that the safest place for an infant or child to sleep is in a JPMA-certified, properly assembled crib or bed.

Mayor Booker welcomed Joe Shamie into his executive offices where they visited for about a half-hour discussing family and their mutual concern that all children have a safe place to sleep.  Both men have been fortunate to be in the position to lead by example and give back to their communities. In that spirit, Mr. Shamie gave Mayor Booker 200 brand new safe cribs for mothers in his constituency along with a pledge to do the same again in 2013 in conjunction with an educational program about safe sleeping for new parents.
