Deloitte Report Encourages Network-Based Approach to Improve Efficiency in Military Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Operations
WASHINGTON, April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- A new Deloitte report released today identifies potential opportunities for the Department of Defense (DoD) to consider implementation of a network-based approach to more efficiently and effectively manage its commercial maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capacity.
The DoD recently indicated their sustainment functions have been stressed due to the increasing operations tempo, and seemingly permanent deployment of critical assets in different theaters of operation. The DoD believes a need exists to increase utilization of their assets, and to improve management of the capabilities employed. Drawing on examples from the Air Force MRO program, the Deloitte report discusses ways a network approach to military MRO operations could facilitate better management of their utilization capability and their ability to draw on underutilized capacity.
"Establishing a network based approach could help military MRO operations in their efforts to run more efficiently and effectively," said Tom Captain, vice chairman and leader of Deloitte's aerospace and defense sector. "Initial U.S. Air Force initiatives have demonstrated tangible results and were implemented with minimal disruption to daily operations. The continued rollout of network based activities in the DoD has the potential to drive value that is measured by increased output and weapon system operational availability."
Using the recent Air Force approach to network-based repair, the Deloitte report discusses why creating unified command and control perspectives can ultimately increase efficiency and promote standardization across the network.
"Although challenges exist to MRO operations due to size, complexity and organizational alignment, we believe the DoD has the opportunity to reap significant productivity gains from a network methodology, specifically through tapping underutilized capacity," concluded report co-author Dennis Schultz, director, Deloitte Consulting LLP.
