STAMFORD, Conn., July 18, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 90 Ph.D. candidates and distinguished faculty members from the U.S. and select international universities convened at the 47th Annual Deloitte Foundation/American Accounting Association (AAA)/J. Michael Cook Doctoral Consortium to discuss current topics in accounting education, research and publishing.
The Doctoral Consortium offers a variety of resources to thousands of Ph.D. students aimed at strengthening the quality and quantity of accounting professors who will teach future generations. By funding key Ph.D. education initiatives, the Foundation forges a connection with the profession and academia to enrich the Ph.D. and student experience.
Since 1971, the AAA/Deloitte Foundation/J. Michael Cook Doctoral Consortium has provided the opportunity for educators to share their experiences and ideas on key issues of importance to students who are about to complete their Ph.D. programs and pursue academic careers. Each year, attendees hear from a diverse group of faculty who present their perspectives on scholarly research, publishing, teaching and the job market.
"The Doctoral Consortium provides opportunities for Ph.D. students to engage with and learn from prominent faculty, which can inspire them to pursue important and relevant research, as well as to make a difference in the classroom," remarked Dr. Jake Thornock, associate professor of Accounting & Robert Smith Fellow, Brigham Young University, Marriott School of Business. "The Consortium is also an excellent networking resource for Ph.D. students to create long-lasting relationships as they begin the academic journey."
At the event, held at Deloitte University in Westlake, Texas, attendees learn about navigating the early years of an academic career—from the interview and placement process to time management, research and publishing—through formal presentations, panels and social activities. Breakout groups also provide attendees with an opportunity to gather feedback on ongoing research and presentation skills.
