STAMFORD, Conn., Oct. 3, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Deloitte Foundation announced a $1 million commitment to fund the American Accounting Association/J. Michael and Mary Anne Cook/Deloitte Foundation "Cook Prize." Established with an initial gift of $1 million from Mike Cook, retired Deloitte & Touche LLP chairman and CEO, and his wife, Mary Anne, the award recognizes up to three professors annually, one each in the categories of graduate, undergraduate and two-year accounting degree programs. Award recipients must consistently demonstrate the attributes of a superior teacher in the discipline of accounting. Each prize consists of a $25,000 cash award, and a silver medallion, and a certificate.
"The future success of the accounting profession depends greatly on how we educate the next generation," said Cook. "We're pleased to recognize professors that not only go above and beyond to educate students, but who, as part of that education, are also instilling important values and best practices which will enable the profession to continue to thrive."
This year's Cook Prize was awarded at the centennial American Accounting Association Annual Meeting. Cook and his wife, along with Michael Diamond, convener of the selectors committee for the prize and professor emeritus at the University of Southern California and chair of the honoree selection committee, presented this year's awards to Professors: G. Peter Wilson (Boston College), Billie Cunningham (University of Missouri), and Markus Ahrens (St. Louis Community College). Additional Deloitte professionals were in attendance, including Deloitte LLP CEO Cathy Engelbert. The recipients in 2015, the inaugural year of the prize, were Joe Hoyle (University of Richmond), Tracie Miller-Nobles (Austin Community College), and Mark Nelson (Cornell University).
The $1 million commitment from the Deloitte Foundation marks an expansion in the foundation's support to the American Accounting Association and emphasizes their shared mission of supporting faculty.
"We congratulate all recipients of the American Accounting Association/J. Michael and Mary Anne Cook/Deloitte Foundation Prize as their work exemplifies their dedication to educate the next generation of talent," said Tonie Leatherberry, president of the Deloitte Foundation. "Recognizing educators with these awards for their teaching excellence is important to the growth of the accounting profession and its practitioners."
