Spruell, 48, drives Deloitte's national strategy for client and business growth and strategic positioning in the local markets across 17 states consisting of 31 offices and more than 14,000 Deloitte professionals, including nearly 4,000 professionals in Chicago.
He succeeds Deborah L. DeHaas as Central region managing partner, Anne Taylor as Mid-America region managing partner and Stacy Janiak as Chicago office managing partner. Deloitte combined its Mid-America and existing Central regions on June 2, the start of its fiscal year. The consolidation builds on Deloitte's hallmark of exceptional, integrated client service.
"Chicago is a wonderful city with dynamic and diverse business and civic communities. It is a privilege to return to my deep roots here to lead our practice," Spruell said. "Deb, Anne and Stacy are incomparable leaders, and they have positioned Deloitte as one of the top professional services organizations in the region. I'm eager to build on their achievements and continue to develop our talent, provide high-quality service to our clients and drive social change in our communities."
DeHaas continues to serve as vice chairman, chief inclusion officer, member of the board of directors of Deloitte LLP, and the U.S. Firms' representative on the Canadian Board of Directors. She remains based in Chicago and maintains her role as lead client service partner or advisory partner to a number of Deloitte's significant clients in the Central region. Janiak serves as Central region managing partner of Deloitte & Touche LLP's Audit and Enterprise Risk Services practice. She also remains based in Chicago and leads the overall management and profit and loss responsibility for the practice in the new region.
Taylor continues as managing partner of Deloitte's Gulf Coast practice. Based in Houston, she continues to serve as lead client service partner or advisory partner to several significant clients in the area.
"Byron is an inspirational leader and mentor, qualities that make him ideal to serve our people and clients," said DeHaas. "I'm delighted to welcome him back to Chicago and look forward to collaborating with him to strengthen our communities and further develop our inclusive workplace culture."
Spruell has 24 years of professional services experience, the last 17 with Deloitte. He was previously based in Chicago for four years as a leader and principal in Deloitte Financial Advisory Services LLP. Most recently, he was Global Managing Director of Financial Advisory for Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited (DTTL) and Managing Principal of Deloitte LLP, acting as chief of staff to Barry Salzberg, former U.S. CEO and current DTTL CEO. He has significant client experience across several industries, especially in the Oil & Gas sector, which he gained while spending seven years in the Houston office.
"Byron brings a global perspective, as well as strong talent development and relationship-building skills, to his new role that will help spur ongoing growth in our Central region," said Chet Wood, vice chairman, Deloitte LLP. "I'm confident that under his leadership, Deloitte will continue to reach new levels of success."
Spruell is active in the community and serves on the board of directors of the Jackie Robinson Foundation and the Metropolitan Family Services Advisory Board. He received an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame where he also played football for the Fighting Irish.
DeHaas was named Central region managing partner in 2011 and has served as chief inclusion officer since 2012. As chief inclusion officer, she drives Deloitte's strategy to recruit, develop, and promote a diverse workforce and foster an inclusive environment. In addition to her responsibilities at Deloitte, DeHaas holds several significant positions in the Chicago communities. Currently, she serves on a number of boards of directors and is the immediate past board chair of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce and the board vice chair of the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago.
