CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Dec. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Deloitte has been announced as a founding member of the National Consortium for Data Science (NCDS), a public-private partnership to capitalize on the opportunities of big data. Deloitte joins a selective group of founding members from various private and non-profit sectors and universities that provides a forum for the data science community to connect scientists and industry leaders; and to identify big data needs, challenges and visions for the future.
"As a firm that serves many industries, Deloitte understands the power of data to enhance decision making, manage risks and provide a competitive advantage," said Bob Dalton, principal, Deloitte Consulting LLP. "We see the NCDS as a way to collaborate with data experts who are leading the march into the era of big data and future leaders within universities."
The NCDS launched in April 2013 as a way to address the challenges and opportunities posed by massive data sets being created by digital medicine, environmental sensors, scientific instruments, social networks, financial transactions and more. Its goals include: identifying key data science challenges that need to be addressed in a national, multidisciplinary and multi-sector fashion; encouraging data science research and partnerships that span academia, industry and government; and facilitating improved data science education and data literacy in the workforce.
Deloitte will engage with the NCDS members and a broad community of data science experts to identify and address data science challenges, facilitate interchange among businesses, governments and researchers in data-intensive domains, provide input to data science research priorities, and advise in the development of data science education programs.
"Deloitte, with its thousands of data analytics specialists and its ties to many industries that create and use big data, will be a tremendous asset to the NCDS," said Stan Ahalt, Ph.D., head of the NCDS steering committee and director of the Renaissance Computing Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an NCDS member. "Our members look forward to collaborating with Deloitte. They will bring another perspective to the data challenges of interest to NCDS members and will give us a stronger voice as we move forward in our efforts to enable the U.S. to reap the benefits of a data-rich world."
