ATLANTA, March 6, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- More than 60 students from universities across the country are using their spring break to drive community change by participating in Maximum Impact: Deloitte's Alternative Spring Break, organized by Deloitte, United Way of Greater Atlanta and United Way Worldwide. The week-long event taking place March 12-16 will provide students the opportunity to make a positive impact on the Greater Atlanta area while also working alongside Deloitte professionals to get an inside look at the professional services industry.
Students will take part in meaningful volunteer services with Easter Seals, Meals on Wheels, Action Ministries, the Atlanta Food Community Food Bank and the Partnership Against Domestic Violence. Participants will also contribute to a collection of more than 45,000 shoeboxes by participating in United Way of Greater Atlanta's Shoebox Project by decorating and filling shoeboxes with personal hygiene products for homeless men, women and children.
"United Way and Deloitte share a commitment to strengthening communities by mobilizing the caring power of young adults across the country," said Paul DeBassio, United Way Worldwide's Executive Vice President of Investor Relations. "Alternative Spring Break is just one way we're working together to provide students with unique volunteer and professional development opportunities that can create a positive impact in someone's life."
A recent Deloitte survey of 8,000 Millennials from 30 countries found that 76 percent regard business as a force for positive social impact. And many Millennials see volunteering as a way to further career goals while making that impact. While most employees (of all ages) expect their employers to be socially responsible, research often shows that Millennials further expect their employers to support their own involvement with causes. This includes being allowed to volunteer during company time.
"Alternative Spring Break provides college students with an inside look at what it's like to work at Deloitte – our culture of purpose, teamwork and personal passion for making an impact that matters in the communities where we live and work," said Diane Borhani, Director, Talent Acquisition Best Practices & Innovation, Deloitte Services LP. "We believe in supporting students, and we know that engaging them early is essential to ensuring their long-term success."
