Dell'Oro Group Expands Coverage on 10 Gbps Ethernet Switches (10GE)
Cisco Leads in Top-of-Rack Switching, HP Leads in Blade Switching
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Dell'Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the networking and telecommunications industries, announced today that it has enhanced its reporting on the 10 Gbps Ethernet (10GE) segment of the Ethernet Switch market. This new coverage provides more insight into the fastest growing area in data center networking, including detail on 10GE purpose built top-of-rack (ToR) switches, 10GE blade switches for the data center, and a break-out of 10GE copper and fiber ports, including 10G Base-T and SFP+ direct attach copper ports.
"Dell'Oro Group has been the leader in quarterly reporting on the Ethernet Switch market since 1995," said Tam Dell'Oro, President of Dell'Oro Group. "As the networking market has evolved, we have continued to expand our research coverage. And today, we are very pleased to announce that we have applied our thorough, rigorous, and consistent market research process to 10GE switches that puts a spotlight on the development of this key data center networking segment," added Dell'Oro.
According to the report, less than half of the current Ethernet Switch vendors offer purpose built 10GE ToR solutions, which grew more than 300 percent year-over-year in the second quarter of this year, and is forecast to exceed a half a billion dollars in 2010. Vendors currently in this space include Arista, Blade, Brocade, Cisco, Dell, Extreme, Force 10, HP, and Juniper.
"We are in the beginning of the most significant network upgrade ever in the data center," said Alan Weckel, Director of Ethernet Switch Market Research at Dell'Oro Group. "Customers are migrating servers from multiple 1000 Mbps connections to two 10GE connections. Features such as high-capacity, low-latency, pluggable interfaces, and a converged fabric, such as the ability to combine Ethernet and Fibre Channel, are becoming standards in data center designs. These are all significant changes, which, when combined with vendor competition, will lead to significant market transitions," Weckel added.
The report indicates that during the second quarter of this year, Cisco was the leader in ToR switches, while HP led the pack in the blade switch segment.
