"Delivery Man" Doesn't Deliver the Facts
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Delivery Man, a new film about one anonymous sperm donor who suddenly discovers he has fathered over 500 children, has caught the attention of California Cryobank (CCB), the nation's leading sperm bank.
No one bats an eye when the White House is destroyed by terrorists, or panics when giant asteroids are on a collision course with Earth, but release a light-hearted comedy about a sperm donor that is responsible for hundreds of children, and fiction quickly becomes mistaken for fact.
"We have definitely been getting a lot of calls about Delivery Man," says Scott Brown, California Cryobank's Director of Client Experience. "It's certainly a fair question, but people should know that 500 offspring by one donor is not at all realistic. The other big misconception is that anyone can be a sperm donor. The reality is that less than 1% of our applicants actually qualify."
So, how many children can a sperm donor have? "The average California Cryobank donor is responsible for helping start 12-15 families, with a maximum of 25-30 families," explains CCB Co-Founder Dr. Charles Sims. "By limiting the number of collections per donor, we are able to prevent anything remotely close to Delivery Man from happening."
According to Brown, "Approximately 70% of our clients are single women and same-sex couples who are very open with their children about how they were conceived. Husbands and wives are also far more open with their children than ever before when it comes to this topic. The idea that two half-siblings could accidentally develop a romantic relationship without discovering their common genetics just isn't a realistic concern."
"One thing that is becoming more common is for families who use the same donor to make contact with each other via the internet. I recently joined one group of CCB donor siblings for their first face-to-face meeting. It was an incredible to watch these kids bond in a completely unique way that added a whole new dimension to the concept of family."
