EUR 100,000 for UNICEF
- Donation will go towards the processing of clean drinking water
- More funds will be collected from customers and employees at 246 locations nationwide until 6 January
- UNICEF patron and general manager of the German football team Oliver Bierhoff accepted the cheque
The international expert organisation DEKRA, active in more than 50 countries, is making an initial Christmas donation of EUR 100,000 to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). DEKRA will also continue collecting money from customers and employees at 246 locations nationwide until 6 January in order to top up the donation. This will ensure practical aid for victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines; the sum will be used in water and hygiene programmes for UNICEF emergency relief. For example, UNICEF is providing diesel generators for water processing, inflatable water tanks, water purification tablets and hygiene kits in regions of the Philippines destroyed by the typhoon in order to secure access to clean drinking water for those affected. "We are delighted that our donation allows us to help to somewhat relieve the unimaginable hardship, especially for children, by supporting UNICEF in securing the essential supply of clean drinking water," said Stefan Kölbl, CEO of DEKRA e.V. and DEKRA SE, in Munich when the cheque was handed over to Oliver Bierhoff, UNICEF patron and general manager of the German football team.
The DEKRA donation means important support for UNICEF emergency relief in the Philippines in terms of water and hygiene (WASH programme: water-sanitation-hygiene). For example, UNICEF is providing powerful diesel generators for water processing and mobile inflatable water tanks with a capacity of 5,000 litres each in the regions destroyed by the typhoon. It is also providing hygiene kits containing canisters, buckets, water purification tablets and soap.
"With this aid, we are consciously taking responsibility for people in need," declared DEKRA CEO Kölbl. "Children need our special support as the most vulnerable victims. Our involvement is intended to provide sustainable aid in the long term. Last year, we supported a hygiene project for schoolchildren in South Africa. More than 30,000 DEKRA employees on all five continents value and support the work that UNICEF does." Oliver Bierhoff, UNICEF patron and general manager of the German football team was delighted by DEKRA's support: "I am sure that every euro will be put to good use. DEKRA's donation will help provide homeless families with clean water and protect them from disease." Referring to his involvement with UNICEF, Bierhoff added: "In the face of a disaster such as this, everyone has to help, because the children suffer the most. That's why I'm pleased about DEKRA's support."
