Deep Web Technologies' Explorit Featured in Charleston Advisor
Product Review Finds DWT's Federated Search the Most Compelling
CHARLESTON, S.C., Nov. 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Deep Web Technologies™ (DWT), the leader in federated search of the Deep Web, today announced that its Explorit™ federated search product has been featured in the most recent issue of Charleston Advisor™, a highly regarded publication providing "Critical Reviews of Web Products for Information Professionals." The article, entitled "Using xSearch for Accelerating Research-Review of Deep Web Technologies' Federated Search Service," describes xSearch, a customized version of Explorit that was developed to help address the broad array of information needs at Stanford University. Explorit is also used at leading research institutions such as George Mason University and Texas Medical Center.
"This is not old school federated search," said Abe Lederman, Deep Web Technologies President and CTO. "xSearch is not so much an evolution as it is a revolution in information discovery. DWT has engineered the next generation in federated search, eliminating many of the limitations of past solutions."
xSearch displays a single search box that by default enables users to search 50 "broad-interest" sources from over 170 sources available. Users can choose to expand or narrow the search domain based on their particular area of interest. Examples of searchable categories include eBooks, business information, technology journals, and international studies. Search results of only the highest relevance are returned and are dynamically clustered by topic, author, publication, publisher and date. xSearch organizes and categorizes large result sets so effectively that results from hundreds of disparate resources are easy to review, even for the novice researcher.
Unlike traditional federated search, with xSearch speed of the search process is not impaired by waiting for notoriously slow search engines to respond. Results from the most responsive sources are displayed as soon as they are available, so that the user can immediately begin exploring results. When slower sources deliver results, a pop-up appears indicating that more sources have returned results, giving the user the option to integrate these additional results into the existing result set.
"We live in a society where instant gratification is the norm, and search is no exception. We are the only federated search solution that can search hundreds of sources at once and return initial results in only a few seconds," challenges Lederman.
xSearch also embeds DWT's "alerts" capability. This provides users with a virtual agent that issues queries on a regular basis and sends alerts via email, RSS, or Atom feeds when new information satisfying search criteria becomes available. This emphasizes the real-time nature of DWT's advanced federated search functionality which, unlike indexed searching, enables users to have access to new content in real time. Researchers do not have to wait for new publications to be indexed, nor does the institution have to do any work to prepare updated content for inclusion. As soon as it's published, new content is accessible to the user.
It is a time of great challenge for users who are overloaded with exponentially increasing amounts information, much of it irrelevant. While pre-indexed search services may be faster than federated search, the content available for search via xSearch is far richer and more up-to-the-minute. Additionally, resources searched in xSearch are selected to meet local academic needs instead of being based on agreements made with publishers by an aggregator. In summation, xSearch enables users to reduce the amount of time they spend searching, making it easier for them to find precisely relevant information on multidisciplinary research topics, and to be alerted in the future when new information relevant to their research topics is published.
