WASHINGTON, March 16, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Decision Sciences International Corporation (DSIC), an advanced technology provider of security and detection systems, today announced it has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office (CTTSO) to build a new type of portable-electronics scanner for threat detection. The contract has an estimated value of $2.1 million.
"We are very pleased to once again have an opportunity to work with the Department of Defense through CTTSO and support its critical mission to combat terrorism at home and abroad through technical innovation," said DSIC CEO Dr. Gene Ray. "This contract builds upon the revolutionary technology inherent in our proven Multi-Mode Passive Detection System (MMPDS) and advances our groundbreaking product suite across industries and applications, now including the scanning of portable electronics."
Under the contract, DSIC will deliver an integrated prototype product to detect small amounts of explosive materials within portable electronic devices such as mobile phones and laptop computers. DSIC will leverage proprietary algorithms developed for its ground breaking, passive scanning technology, which uses naturally occurring cosmic ray muons and electrons to scan larger volumes such as trucks and maritime cargo containers. The developed prototype will safely, quickly and automatically detect, identify and locate potential threats within portable electronic devices.
"Our disruptive and revolutionary passive scanning technology is capable of making a material difference in the fight against global terrorism," said DSIC Chairman Stuart J. Rabin. "We commend CTTSO for its forward thinking and action oriented approach in addressing ever-increasing threats. We are honored to be part of the solution."
DSIC's proven MMPDS uses naturally occurring cosmic ray muons and electrons to safely and securely scan all types of vehicles, cargo containers and other conveyances to detect shielded and unshielded nuclear and radiological threats, as well as explosives, narcotics and other contraband and anomalies. The underlying technology is based on research originally conducted at Los Alamos National Laboratory and incorporates a substantial portfolio of enabling intellectual property developed by DSIC. MMPDS is commercially deployed, including at the Freeport Container Port in the Bahamas.

About Decision Sciences
Decision Sciences is a technology company with headquarters in Virginia and an R&D center in California that brings together cutting edge science, hardware and software development, systems integration and manufacturing to improve the safety and security of the global community. Based on revolutionary and disruptive technology originally invented by physicists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Multi-Mode Passive Detection System (MMPDS) was then developed with considerable private sector investment and expertise. The MMPDS is a totally passive, safe, effective and automated scanning system for quickly detecting, locating and identifying unshielded to heavily shielded radiological and nuclear threats as well as explosives and other contraband and anomalies. Moreover, without slowing down the flow of commerce, the MMPDS uniquely satisfies the 100% scanning requirement recommended by the U.S. 9/11 Commission and later enacted into law by the U.S. Congress. The core technology inherent in the MMPDS also has wide ranging applications beyond the security arena, including in the medical, mining and energy industries and can facilitate the efficient collection and aggregation of significant amounts of previously unavailable data.
