MIDDLEBURG, Va., Sept. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Decision Sciences International Corporation (DSIC), an advanced technology provider of security and detection systems, and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), a premiere science and technology research institution and U.S. federal laboratory, today announced they have been recognized by the Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC) as a 2014 Excellence in Technology Transfer award winner.
Each year the FLC recognizes federal labs and their industry partners for exceptional results in technology transfer. The national award is one of the highest honors awarded in the technology transfer arena and highlights the commitment to provide access of federally created technologies to the public. DSIC and LANL were selected for their groundbreaking work in the development and commercialization of Muon Scattering Tomography.
"We are honored to be recognized with LANL for the successful technology transfer of muon tomography and the commercial application of the Multi-Mode Passive Detection System (MMPDS)," said Decision Sciences President and CEO Dr. Stanton D. Sloane. "This recognition underscores how public-private partnerships not only accelerate the economy but also make the world safer."
MMPDS uses naturally occurring cosmic ray muons to safely and securely scan all types of vehicles and cargo containers to detect shielded and unshielded nuclear and radiological threats, as well as explosives and other contraband. The technology is based on research originally conducted at LANL and incorporates a substantial portfolio of enabling intellectual property developed by Decision Sciences.
"Muon Tomography is a great example of the national laboratories working with industry to deploy national security technologies," said David Pesiri, Director of the Feynman Center for Innovation at Los Alamos National Laboratory. "We recognize that there are numerous applications for this revolutionary detection technology and we are pleased to support Decision Sciences as they continue their commercial deployment efforts. The transition of this important technology from the laboratory to the commercial marketplace is a meaningful example of how Los Alamos can help meet our national security mission through partnerships."
The annual FLC award enters its third decade recognizing federal laboratories and their industry partners. For more information about the FLC award, visit http://www.federallabs.org/flc/awards/program/.

About Decision Sciences
Decision Sciences is a technology company with headquarters in Virginia and an R&D center in California that brings together cutting edge science, hardware and software development, systems integration and manufacturing to improve the safety and security of the global community. Based on revolutionary and disruptive technology originally invented by physicists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Multi-Mode Passive Detection System (MMPDS) was then developed with considerable private sector investment and expertise. The MMPDS is a totally passive, safe, effective and automated scanning system for quickly detecting, locating and identifying unshielded to heavily shielded radiological and nuclear threats as well as explosives and contraband. Moreover, without slowing down the flow of commerce, the MMPDS uniquely satisfies the 100% scanning requirement recommended by the U.S. 9/11 Commission and later enacted into law by the U.S. Congress. The core technology inherent in the MMPDS also has wide ranging applications beyond the security arena, including in the medical, mining and energy industries and can facilitate the efficient collection and aggregation of significant amounts of previously unavailable data.
