Kimberly Maresh, event Co-Chair, stated, "This year we tripled our number of runners and had supporters fly in from all over the country and internationally!" Event Co-Chair Lori Coopersmith added, "It's heart-warming and amazing to see a group of strangers come together as one to run and to raise awareness for stomach cancer research on behalf of stomach cancer patients and fighters who are no longer with us."
Prior to the run, the committee held a Kick-Off Party on Friday, January 22, 2016 which was generously hosted by the Tilted Kilt in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The night included delicious food, raffles, inspirational speeches, and bonding with fellow DDF runners. On the day of the marathon, DDF provided a runner's dream atmosphere filled with the essentials for an optimal run experience: DDF t-shirts, fuel food, water, and complimentary massages. Debbie's Dream high school club members volunteered and supported the team by cheering them on with handmade inspirational posters.
About Debbie's Dream Foundation: Curing Stomach Cancer
Debbie's Dream Foundation: Curing Stomach Cancer (DDF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about stomach cancer, advancing funding for research, and providing education and support internationally to patients, families, and caregivers. Debbie's Dream Foundation seeks as its ultimate goal to make the cure for stomach cancer a reality.
DDF was founded in 2009 by Debbie Zelman after she was diagnosed with stage IV incurable stomach cancer in 2008 and given only weeks to live. Zelman immediately began to educate herself about this disease and to seek the best available care. When she responded favorably to her treatment, Debbie founded DDF which now has chapters throughout the United States, Canada, and Germany and a Medical Advisory Board of renowned doctors from across the country and internationally. Now, almost eight years later, Debbie is still receiving chemotherapy and is thrilled to be able to watch her three children grow up. To learn more about DDF, please visit us at www.DebbiesDream.org.
