Deadline Looming for Flood Insurance Claims
OKLAHOMA CITY, June 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Oklahomans with flood insurance who have damage from the recent storms are running out of time to file a claim. A federal disaster was declared for 20 Oklahoma counties for the storms from May 5 to June 4. All claims must be filed within 60 days of the flooding.
"We want to make sure everyone who has damage is on the road to recovery," said Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John D. Doak. "Filing a claim is the first step. But there is a deadline for anyone who had flood insurance under the National Flood Insurance Program."
A flood insurance policy is separate from your homeowner's policy which, in most cases, does not pay for flood claims. The National Flood Insurance Program is run by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It works with nearly 90 private insurance companies to offer flood insurance.
To file a claim, call your insurance agent. An adjuster should contact you within a few days. The adjuster will need evidence of the damage to your home or business.
- Take photographs of all damaged property including discarded items, structural damage and standing floodwater levels.
- Make a list of damaged or lost items and include their date of purchase, value and receipts, if possible.
- Officials may require disposal of damaged items. If possible, place flooded items outside of your home.
Your adjuster will provide you with a Proof of Loss form for your official claim damages. Remember, you must file this claim with your insurance company within 60 days of the flood.
For general flood insurance questions, call the National Flood Insurance Call Center at 800-427-4661 or go to floodsmart.gov.
